Choosing Your Professions

Choosing Your Professions

Introduction

Profession can take up a large amount of time but help define your character. Professions are used to make helpful items, to use or to sell. You are allowed two Primary Professions, which are split into Gathering and Crafting, and all three Secondary Professions.

2-professions

Profession Levelling Costs

profession_costs_chart1

This graph shows you how much to expect each Crafting Profession to cost if you don’t gather the materials yourself. Find the spreadsheet for this data here.

Primary Professions

You have a choice of two of these Professions. It is suggested to learn one Gathering and one Crafting Profession. This way you can stock up on the materials for your Crafting Profession rather than having to spend lots of gold.

Gathering Professions

These Professions gather materials from the landscape which can be used in Crafting Professions.

2-herbalism

Herbalist

Basics

This Profession allows you to gather herbs from selected plants. You will gain a tracking ability, which will display herbs on your mini-map.

Usefulness

This Profession is very useful if you decide to choose Alchemy or Inscription.

Cost

You can’t spend gold to level up this profession. It must be levelled up by gathering. Herbs are fairly expensive to sell.

Potential Earnings

Selling herbs, among what else you can gain from Herbalism, can be extremely profitable. This is because not all Alchemists have time to pick the herbs that they need, especially if creating potions for an entire guild.

Conclusion

If you are selecting Alchemy or Inscription as a Profession then it is strongly suggested you choose Herbalism. Herbalism can also be a very good way of making gold as herbs are fairly quick to gather and rather expensive.

2-mining

Miner

Basics

Mining gives you the ability to mine ore nodes. You also gain the ability to track any nodes in your area on your mini map. Finally, you gain the ability to smelt different ores into bars.

Usefulness

Mining is a very useful Profession if you learn Blacksmithing, Jewel Crafting or Engineering along with it.

Cost

You do have the chance to buy ore and then smelt it to gain level in Mining. However it is far more efficient to simply mine selected ores to level the Profession. Ore is the most expensive gathering material.

Potential Earnings

Selling ore and bars can be extremely profitable and can be sold very quickly. This is due to it being in such high demand and being fairly difficult to farm.

Conclusion

If you are looking to become a Blacksmith, Jewelcrafter or Engineer is very important that you take Mining. Mining can earn you huge amounts of gold if you sell the gathered materials but can be fairly hard to farm large quantities.

2-skinning

Skinner

Basics

Skinning gives you the ability to skin beasts and other creatures once you have killed them. You will gain leather and different scales from doing this.

Usefulness

This is a very useful skill if you decide to choose Leatherworking.

Cost

The only way to level Skinning is to gather so the Profession is free to level. Leather has a fair price.

Potential Earnings

Leathers cost is generally fairly low in price and doesn’t sell as well as the other gathering materials do. However certain kinds of leather, along with most scales will sell for very high prices. The main problem is that it is a hard Profession to farm materials.

Conclusion

Although Skinning won’t make you as much gold as Mining or Herbalism will and is probably the hardest Gathering Profession to farm materials, it is needed by Leatherworkers and as well as some Tailors.

Crafting Professions

These Professions create useful items for all different classes. You can either use what you make or sell it on.

2-alchemy

Alchemist

Basics

Alchemy allows you to create potions and elixirs and also allows you to transmute certain substances. It fits extremely well along side Herbalism.

Usefulness

Alchemy can be fairly helpful for Hunters. It can create potions to help maximise damage as well as keep both health and mana from becoming exhausted. A vast amount of potions and transmutes will in no way aid the Hunter unfortunately and will have to be sold off. No items of use are bind on pickup meaning every potion you could want can be simply bought at the Auction House instead.

Cost

Alchemy is a fairly cheap Profession to level. It is also one of the easiest to level in a short period of time.

Potential Earnings

Alchemy seems to be a great way to make gold. This is because everyone is willing to buy potions to help improve their play. As a Hunter most potions you create will be no use to you and will have to be sold. This means you can make a huge profit from what you make. As well as this, people are generally looking for an Alchemist to transmute certain items for them. You can put fairly hefty creation charges for certain items and people will still pay.

Conclusion

Alchemy is a fair choice for a Hunter. It makes large sums of money and you gain a few potions that will boost your stats and game play. However, any potion a Hunter needs can simply be bought at the Auction House. You can have the same benefit without having the Profession and simply spending a bit of gold.

2-blacksmithing

Blacksmith

Basics

Blacksmithing allows you to create plate and mail armour along with different varieties of weapons and other items made from stone and metals. It fits very well with Mining.

Usefulness

As a Hunter Blacksmithing is not useful at all. You cannot equip most of what you can make as a Blacksmith and all the mail pieces are suited for Enhancement Shamans.

Cost

Blacksmithing is extremely expensive due to the price of ore as well as other items such as gems.

Potential Earnings

You cannot make a great deal off Blacksmithing. Most decent pieces are bind on pickup so cannot be sold.

Conclusion

An awful choice for a Hunter. It will cost a huge amount of gold, earn you little and you will only receive an item or two maximum out of it.

2-enchanting

Enchanter

Basics

This Profession allows the Hunter to upgrade his armour and weapons by enchanting them with additional stats. You also gain the ability to disenchant certain items into materials for Enchanting such as dust and shards. Enchanting can fit with any Profession.

Usefulness

Every Class needs enchants so it is very useful. However very few enchants are solely for the Enchanter, meaning you can still gain almost every enchant you want from someone else. However buying materials can be expensive.

Cost

Enchanting materials are very expensive so if you don’t disenchant your own your looking at a lot of gold to upgrade your skill.

Potential Earnings

If you take full advantage of Enchanting then earnings can be huge. To start just disenchanting and selling the materials can make you huge amounts. Also charging fees for enchanting others gear can make you a hefty sum as well.

Conclusion

This is a great skill like Alchemy. Huge money potential and it upgrades your stats. But also like Alchemy, you don’t have to have the Profession to take full advantage of it.

2-engineering

Engineer

Basics

Engineering creates all sorts of useful items. From rocket boots to mechanical squirrels Engineering has it all. It fits very well with Mining.

Usefulness

Engineering seems to be equally helpful for every class. Hunters will benefit most from the scopes and ammo created, as well as all the nifty little trinkets to suit every situation. A very helpful Profession for a variety of reasons.

Cost

Engineering is fairly expensive even if you choose Mining along with it. This is because Engineering uses a huge range of materials to make its many items. It is strongly suggested to choose Mining otherwise the cost will increase significantly.

Potential Earnings

Engineering is not a massive earner due to most creatable items requiring Engineering to use. However there are certain items, such as extractors, that can help you make massive amount of gold. There are also selected items that can potentially earn you huge amounts as well.

Conclusion

Engineering seems to be a very good choice for the Hunter. The ability to create your own ammo and scopes is handy, but the amount of extra items you can create on top of those really opens up your game play style giving you much more variety.

2-inscription

Inscriber

Basics

Much like Enchanting, Inscribing gives boosts to your abilities. Herbalism is the best matching Profession to have alongside.

Usefulness

Inscription is useful to every class, letting players add to and change features of their spells and abilities. There are also other items, such as scrolls, that other players will wish to purchase.

Cost

Inscription can vary in price depending on how well groups of herbs are stocked. Stocks can vary, meaning raised prices now and then. However it tends to be a fairly cheap profession to level due to the large array of items to level it with.

Potential Earnings

Inscription can bring you a steady flow of gold depending on what glyphs and other recipes you have. Certain recipes stay in high demand where as others will not make huge profits. Find the right recipes to make higher amounts of gold.

Conclusion

Inscription is a great Profession to have if you like to customise your character for different situations whenever you like. However it’s not the greatest moneymaker, but still worth considering.

2-jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafter

Basics

The Hunter gains the ability to create a variety of gems, rings, necklaces and trinkets. You also gain the ability to prospect ore, destroying the ore in the search of gems. Mining fits well will Jewelcrafting.

Usefulness

Jewelcrafting is very helpful due to a lot of higher-level armour pieces being able to be socketed. Every class is looking for gems to perfect their gear. There are also a few trinkets that can come in handy to help maximise the Hunters damage as a bonus. However gems are not bind on pickup and can be used if you don’t have the Jewelcrafting Profession.

Cost

Jewelcrafting can vary in price. Simply buying the required gems can be very expensive. However if you select mining and prospect the ore, it largely depends on how lucky you are in getting the gems you want.

Potential Earnings

Earnings also vary on how lucky you are at prospecting. Profits can be huge as long as you play your timing and strategy right. There are certain periods for example, where gems are in high demand. Saving gems for these periods can boost your profits.

Conclusion

Creating and selling gems can be a huge money maker, possibly the best of any profession. However almost every item created which is useful for a Hunter can be bought and used without the Profession.

2-leatherworking

Leatherworker

Basics

This Profession allows the Hunter to create leather and mail armour along with extras such as ammo bags and armour kits. This fit perfectly with Skinning.

Usefulness

Leatherworking is extremely useful for the Hunter as it provides armour for you thought the game. Some of the pieces you can make may be better than anything else you will ever see. There are also many extras that fit perfectly with the Hunter such as quivers and ammo pouches. You can also specialize in different areas, one of which seems to perfectly match the Hunters needs.

Cost

Leatherworking is very expensive. This is because the sheer amounts of materials you need to level the Profession. Although other Professions can be more expensive, they are far easier and quicker to farm the needed materials for compared to Leatherworking.

Potential Earnings

Potential earnings as a leatherworker are not great. Your best chance to make gold is to learn some rare recipes and produce as many as you can of them. Although you can make a fair amount this way it will require a large amount of farming for maximum profits.

Conclusion

Probably about the most useful Profession for a Hunter, yet about the worst for making gold. You will be able to equip yourself with gear and items which would be impossible to attain without the Profession. End game items are extremely good compared to most item drops and rewards.

2-tailoring

Tailor

Basics

Tailoring allows the creation of cloth armour and a few various items such as bags.

Usefulness

To a Hunter this is in no way useful. As a Hunter you want to equip leather and mail, not cloth armour.

Cost

Tailoring is not too expensive to level due to most cloth being common world drops and needing no Profession to gather.

Potential Earnings

You cannot make a great deal from Tailoring as most of the rare items creatable are bind on pickup and cannot be sold. The main way to make gold is though the creation of bags s this is an item every class needs.

Conclusion

A very bad choice for a Hunter as it’s not a good way to make gold and very few items you create will be useful for you.

Secondary Professions

Anyone can learn all three Secondary Professions along side their primary ones. These Professions are used to make life easier as well as for making money.

2-cooking

Cooking

Basics

Cooking allows you to cook meat found from certain animals as well as fish. Cooked meat is used to restore health and to feed to pets.

Usefulness

Cooking is very useful for a Hunter. It supplies for your pet with food, although most can eat meats in the raw form, which is an advantage. It also supplies you with food to eat to restore health as well as supply certain buffs to improve your stats for periods of time.

Cost

Cooking can be fairly expensive if you buy the raw meat from the Auction House. However it’s easy enough to farm everything you’ll need yourself and is fairly cheap to level if you put in a bit of effort.

Potential Earnings

You can make a fair amount of profit from cooking if you farm for the right meat. Everyone later on in game wants certain food to buff their stats. If you can acquire the right kind of meat, and cook it, lots of people are keen to buy it.

Conclusion

Cooking is a very important Profession to keep high all the way through the game. Being able to create your own food for yourself and your pet saves a huge amount of gold. You will also be able to make a neat little profit out of it later on in game as well.

2-first-aid

First Aid

Basics

First Aid allows you to create bandages from cloth. Bandages can be used in combat and are a very fast way of healing yourself.

Usefulness

If you are attacked while using a bandage it will be interrupted and you will lose its affect. This is no real problem for a Hunter because your pet can tank your target away from you while you use it. Bandages keep downtime low when you become subject to melee, making them very useful. Bandages are also really great in PvP as well as raids, giving you a quick health boost to prevent you from dying.

Cost

While levelling you will come across cloth dropping everywhere and should easily be able to level this skill as you go along. If you do find yourself short, cloth is normally fairly cheap at the Auction Hose as it is very easy to collect.

Potential Earnings

There is no real way to make money from first aid as pretty much everyone can do it themselves as it is so easy to level. However it is a great utility skill.

Conclusion

Easy to level and very useful for speeding up your game play. Well worth levelling, even if it can’t make you money.

2-fishing

Fishing

Basics

Fishing gives the ability to catch different species of fish, among other items such as scrolls and parts of wreckage, from water.

Usefulness

Fishing fits very well with Cooking, as many cooking recipes require fish. It is also a very helpful way to catch food for your pet.

Cost

The only way to spend gold on fishing is to buy lures and to upgrade your fishing pole. This however is very cheap and will boost your fishing skill.

Potential Earnings

Certain species of fish sell for huge amounts. This is because they are needed for certain Cooking recipes and very few people bother to catch these fish.

Conclusion

Fishing is a Profession really worth levelling up. It can save you gold on your pets food among other things and can be a nice way to make gold and to level up your Cooking skill.

Conclusion

The following Professions are great choices as they aid the Hunter and you have to have the Profession to take advantage of it.

Skinning and Leatherworking is a great first choice. Although you cannot make huge amount of gold it will help the Hunter the most by upgrading gear as well as supplying quivers and ammo pouches.

Mining and Engineering is a good second choice, due to it’s various ways of helping the Hunters game play, as well as being able to produce ammo, scopes and guns. Lastly all the best pieces you make can only be used by engineers and are normally bind on pickup.

These following Professions are seen as secondary choices. You can take almost the same advantage from them without actually have them. By having them, you will simply save gold, as you cam create the items yourself rather than buy them, and make you huge profits.

Mining and Jewelcrafting. Probably the best way to make gold and will supply you with all the gems you need to socket your items.

Herbalism and Alchemy. Having the Professions gives you more freedom to use as many potions as you like, as they won’t cost you. It also seems a very good way to make quick gold.

Enchanting and Inscription. Both these skills allow you to boost your Hunters strengths. Enchanting your armour and abilities gives you huge bonuses. Being able to do the enchants yourself saves large amounts of time and gold looking for others to do the same job for you. You can also make large amounts of gold from disenchanting, to boost your Inscription.
